Welcome to the grand tour of car boot spaces, where the titanic clash of suitcases and golf clubs unfolds. And our today's gladiator entering the arena is none other than the Volkswagen Passat, a chariot that has gracefully matured like a fine wine over the generations. The current model, the Passat B9, boasts a cavernous 690 liters of boot space, threatening to swallow your belongings whole and leave room for an elephant or two.
VW Passat - How has the boot space changed over the generations?
The evolution of the Passat’s boot space is as fascinating as watching a snail race, yet much more rewarding. Beginning with the B1, an admirable attempt at 470 liters set the stage. A diversity of figures followed with each iteration, where they allowed it to breathe and expand to 480 liters in the B2, learned some magic tricks and reached 578 in the B3, and somehow deflated back to 495 in the B4. I won't bore you with a detailed count, but let's just say that the numbers went back and forth like an indecisive pendulum, until the B9 threw down the gauntlet with a cavernous 690 liters, as if it's been hitting the gym and flexing its muscles at the boot space Olympics.

The boot space compared to other VW models
In the grand scheme of Volkswagen's automotive chessboard, the Passat B9's boot is the queen, with all the cunning moves and spaces. The nimble VW up! and its incarnations barely scrape together a quarter of the space, at a paltry 250 or so liters. The devout Golf family, including the GTI, R, and GTE, muster up a weak resistance with just over 370 liters, the T-Roc packs a decent 445 liters, but the Passat just watches them all with a nonchalant smirk. Even the lofty Tiguan bows with 615 liters, and the Arteon, with its 563 liters, can only watch in envy as the Passat B9 strides past. Only the cavernous interiors of the Touareg and the Tiguan Allspace dare to compete, with 810 and 760 liters respectively – although in comparison to the Passat they're more like sumo wrestlers to its ballroom dancer.

How does the boot space of the VW Passat compare to it's nearest competitors?
What about outside the VW empire, you ask? Well, the Citroen Berlingo tries valiantly with a boot space of 624 liters - commendable, but still trailing in the Passat's dust. The Lynk & Co 01 proudly flourishes its 466 liters, which in this context, feels like bringing a pocket knife to a cannon fight. Mazda's 2 squeaks in at 267 liters – enough for a potted plant and a week's groceries, perhaps. Even the Hyundai H 100's massive van-like expanse can't directly compete, as it's like comparing a warehouse to a premium storage unit. So, it's clear, in terms of boot capacity, the Passat B9 is a capacious king, reigning supreme with a boot you could probably rent out as a studio flat in some cities.
