When discussing the RAV4, you can't just skirt around the subject of boot space; it's like ignoring the elephant in the room—except, in this case, the elephant lives in the back of your car. The current Toyota RAV4 offers a cavernous 580 liters of boot capacity, chewing up luggage with relative ease, compared to the garage-sale-special boot size of 270 liters found in the first-gen RAV4. That’s enough room to embarrass a magician trying to fit his rabbit collection into a hat.
The journey from the RAV4’s utilitarian roots to its present-day suburban driveway staple status includes significant revisions in the boot department. In the second-generation, the boot shrank to a mere 150 liters, before somebody at Toyota had a mild panic and expanded it to 450 liters in the third-gen. This Toyota game of boot Tetris continued until the fifth-gen RAV4 arrived at a harmonious compromise of 580 liters, making it capable of ingesting anything short of a grand piano.

It seems the RAV4 suffers from a bit of an identity crisis in Toyota's lineup—can't carry as much as the Proace City Verso and can't be as compact as the Aygo. However, where it does find its sweet spot is in staying far more practical than the petite GR Yaris and keeping a respectful distance from the cavernous hold of the RAV4 Plug-In Hybrid's 520 liters of space, which isn’t very hybrid-like if it can’t even beat its traditionally-fueled sibling, now is it?

Let's take a step back and see where the RAV4 stands amongst the competition. It sneers at the Honda HR-V and its 285 liters, gives a patronizing pat on the back to the Nissan Juke's 251 liters and strides past the quasi-posh DS 7’s 555 liters with a knowing nod. But when lined up against the likes of Tesla Model Y's transport locker of a boot at 854 liters or Genesis GV80’s land-bound cargo ship, even the RAV4 has to admit defeat. Yet, despite the odds and competition, the RAV4 boasts a competitive booty, one that’s neither humiliated by longer wheelbases nor intimidated by the bullies of the boot space world.
